VPN – Virtual Private Networks
A VPN is a private network that uses a public network (usually the Internet) to connect remote sites or users together. Instead of using a dedicated, real-world connection such as a leased line, a VPN uses ‘virtual’ connections routed through the Internet from a company’s private network to a remote site or employee.
Generally, the VPN operates in a shared infrastructure environment that reduces the overall cost of the network. These lower cost networks are attractive to SME’s, especially when compared to traditional point-to-point connections such as Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) or Frame Relay.
VPN’s connect offices together so that you can work on one network.

QoS VPN (Quality of Service)
The QoS VPN product has been enhanced to provide Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities. This means if you are running multiple applications on your corporate Virtual Private Network (VPN), you are now able to prioritise critical over non-critical data traffic.
QoS VPN also allows you to run high performance applications such as Voice and Video over the IP data service. The QoS VPN product offering provides 3 different packages to VPN customers. These are the Bronze, Silver and Gold QoS packages. Each of these packages corresponds to QoS being applied to certain components of a VPN network as shown on the table below.
QoS Packages | CPE QoS | Core QoS | VBR Access Link |
---|---|---|---|
BRONZE | ☑ | ||
SILVER | ☑ | ☑ | |
GOLD | ☑ | ☑ | ☑ |
Offers downstream traffic prioritization (i.e. from the core network to the end customer’s CPE) in addition to the upstream prioritisation already provided by Bronze. The service ATM PVC provisioned still uses the Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) class of service category.
